外差干涉仪又称双频干涉仪或交流干涉仪。是使用两种不同频率的单色光作为测量光束和参考光束。通过光电探测器的混频，输出差频信号（受光电探测器频响的限制，频差一般在 100兆赫以内）。被测物体的变化如位移、振动、转动、大气扰动等引起的光波相位变化或多普勒频移载于此差频上，经解调即可获得被测数据的仪器。外差干涉仪的突出优点是：①由于物体变化所产生的多普勒频移信息是载于稳定的差频上，且其频率较高（几兆至100兆赫）,因此，光电探测时避过了激光器的低频噪声和半导体器件的1/f噪声区;又利用频率跟踪等外差解调技术大量滤除了宽带噪声，因此提高了光电信号的信噪比。例如零差干涉测长仪中，当测量光束受外界干扰光强衰减50％时，就不易正常工作，而外差干涉测长仪则可在光强衰减90％时仍能正常工作，因此能用于生产现场，并能测量较长距离（大于60米）。②可以直接从输出频率相对于差频的增减判别运动的方向，因此可以测量物体的连续变化过程如随机振动波形，气流扰动随时间变化过程，而零差干涉仪较难实现。外差干涉仪现已广泛应用于测速、测长、测角、测振、测表面光洁度、测激光束通过湍流时光束的扰动、提高望远镜的视轴瞄准精度以及作自适应光学中的鉴相器等领域，获得了比零差干涉仪更高的精度。外差干涉仪中两种不同频率的光束可由两只稳频的激光器提供，也可以利用磁光、电光、声光效应或旋转光栅盘的衍射效应提供。
