1st Referee comments
This is a very interesting paper and presents a unique approach to detection and control of spontaneous combustion of coal discard dumps. The information presented will be of interest to South African mines.
The methods employed to detect hot spots in a dump as well as the method used to col such areas seems to be practical and in fact in use on Chinese mines.
The one aspect that the paper unfortunately does not address is that of cost.If the authors were to include some information on the cost of the methods used it would add a lot of value to the paper.
The paper is logically set out but difficult to read. The paper will have to be language-edited prior to publication

2nd Referee comments
This is an important paper summarising an attempt to detect, manage and monitor self heating in coal discard stockpiles. The only limitation to this paper is its lack of discussion concerning prevention of self heating from the outset, i.e. it is assumed that the stockpiles under review were“dumped” in unmanaged forms, without compaction and stored at great height, etc.So this paper covers issues relate to the consequences of such storage.
The review given provides a reasonable summary of how others have managed self heating in coal stockpiles and the information provided in this paper outlines an interesting programme of how the authors have approached their own problems.The consequences of their handling proves success at least for the period of time reported (about one month).The answers to the handling of self heating presented are logical and worthy of consideration (albeit they – the LCD system - potentially costly) for situations encountered in the Southern African region.
The methods were sound and valid.Proof was provided of the outcomes of the testwork.
The authors make a valiant effort to comply with all the usual publication norms (abstract, keywords, headings, text, tables and figures) but the grammar does require handling in order to clarify some of the descriptions, discussions and conclusions.
I would recommend that editing to be undertaken.
