Well, I absolutely agree! But what can you do to improve your reading skills in English so that you can become a better reader and actually start enjoying it?

That is exactly what this lesson is all about! Now there are a ton of benefits to reading English texts.

You e going to build your vocabulary, right? As you learn new words.
你可以增加词汇量，对吧？而且可以学习新的单词。
But youll be learning those words together in chunks, right?
Together in sentences so that you can learn how to use them correctly and the words that they e often used with.
但是你需要以组块的形式学习那些词汇，对吗？在一个句子当中学习，这样你就可以学习如何正确使用它们，以及它们经常和哪些单词搭配使用。
Youll also experience how words express tone and feeling through the interactions between characters.
So tone in writing is the authors attitude and this is an incredibly useful way to learn how to choose the right words to express feeling and emotion in English.

Maybe you don really love reading even in your own native language. Well then, reading in English is probably going to be even more painful, right?

But maybe you prefer watching movies or listening to podcasts—something like that. Perhaps you get frustrated because you feel like readings a chore.

Alright that one might seem completely obvious but I had to say it! You e not going to improve your reading without reading, right?

Thats the same for so many things in life, right? The more you do it, the easier it gets.

Now this might take you a little effort at first, right? To get to that point, you might need to say to yourself:

Alright every day, at six oclock in the evening, Im going to spend fifteen minutes reading. So you do it every night.

You know what they say? It takes twenty-one days to make something a habit, right? So if you do it consistently for twenty-one days youll have a good chance of bringing daily reading practice into your life.

Ive got a couple of Spanish readers and I always go down to the beach and practise there and it is so relaxing, its one of my favourite times of day.
Now theres a good chance that you e thinking: But what should I read?

Well choose what you read carefully. The easy part of this decision is just choosing topic or a genre that you like, right?

If you love reading soppy, romantic novels—do it! Quit thinking that something has to be educational for you to learn, right? Its just not true.

If you love reading comics, thats fine too! Well, try and choose a comic thats got a little more text in it, right? A little more reading.

Or choose one of those really awesome illustrated books for teenagers, Ive made some recommendations in the comments below.
But the story lines in those books, in those types of books, are often fun and entertaining and theres images that help you to kind of engage in the story as well.
或者是选择专门为青少年量身定制的插画书，我在评论处给了大家一些推荐。但是那些书里面的故事线都挺有趣的，很具有娱乐性，还有一些图片可以帮助你们更加融入到这个故事。
Its going to make your reading practice much less of a chore, right?
Nobody wants to drag themselves through a book or a novel—a massive novel.
这会让你的阅读练习不那么像是例行公事，对吧？没有人希望拖拖拉拉地去读一本书或者是一本小书——一部大部头。
Especially one that they don like. Or thats boring, right?
尤其是他们不喜欢的。或者是很无聊的，是吧？
Theres just so much material out there for you to read that there is absolutely no reason to be reading something that you e not into, right?
Pick something that interests you, whether its the sports section of the newspaper or a mystery novel or a nonfiction book about plants, it doesn matter at all.
But what does matter is that you enjoy what you e reading so that it encourages you to do it more, right?

One really common problem that I see among my students is that they e too ambitious with their reading material, right?
A pre-intermediate student reading Jane Austen novels, I mean, I think thats really a form of torture.

Right? Pride and Prejudice has extremely advanced vocabulary and sarcasm and complex sentence structures.
It could be really hard work to try and get to the end of a book like that.

So you need to be looking at texts that are the right level for you, that help you to get through them.
And if you e a Jane Austen fan, well, Ive got some recommendations in the description because her novels are so popular that theyve been adapted for teenage readers and intermediate level students as well, so this could be perfect for you.

Im going to add the link in the description. And to be completely honest, the vocabulary in books written for teenagers and younger people is usually extremely useful for everyday English use, right?

So don let your ego get in the way between you and a fantastic read, right? Now I also want to mention to be true to yourself here.

If you just can stand reading pages and pages of text in a novel, thats cool! Read a daily blog post instead or a magazine article.

It really doesn matter what you read, as long as you e enjoying it.
Now if you like to read but you don want to lug around a notebook or a dictionary with you, then an e-reader is a really good option, right?
你读什么其实并不重要，只要你享受阅读过程。如果你想要阅读，但是不想一直随身携带笔记本或者是词典的话，那电子阅读器是一个很好的选择，对吧？
I just have Kindle downloaded on my phone so all of my books come with me everywhere that I go. And this makes your practice really easy, right?
我手机上下了kindle的软件，所以无论我去哪里，我的书都一直跟着我。这会让你的练习非常简单，是吧？
Youve got books with you all the time. And the cool thing is that e-readers help you to translate words or things really simply, just by touching the word on the screen.
你一直带着你的书。很棒的一件事情就是电子阅读器能够很简单地帮助你翻译单词或者是文本，点击一下屏幕上的单词就可以。
So that could be a good option and make it a little easier to get into a reading practice.
As Ive mentioned, Ive got a list of book recommendations in the description below and if you still don know what to read, then heres another one of my favourite tips.

Read a book that youve already read in your own language. Right?
Reading a book that youve already read once or even a few times in your own language can eliminate a lot of the hard work, painful work, when you e reading a book in English, right?
读一本你已经用自己的母语读过的书。对吧？读一本你已经用自己的母语读过一次甚至是很多次的书能够减少很多当你用英语阅读的时候繁重痛苦的工作，对吧？
Firstly, you already know that youll like the book, right?
And secondly, you don have to worry about misunderstanding something or words that you e unsure of, it doesn mean that you have to stop reading and look them up so that you understand the story, right?
首先，你已经知道你会喜欢这本书的，是吧？其次，你不需要担心误解了你不确定的什么内容或者是单词，这就意味着你并不需要停止阅读，然后进行查阅才能理解这个故事，对吧？
Youll be able to fill in the gaps in your understanding from your previous knowledge. You already know the story, you won get stuck on the details, right?
你能够运用先前的知识来填补理解的空缺。既然你已经知道这个故事了，你就不会被细节所困住，对吧？
Youll be able to focus on learning new words and expressions without having to look up all of the in-between words which is really great for morale.
And generally just makes the experience a bit more enjoyable which is what we e all about!
你可以专注于学习心得单词和表达，不需要查阅中途遇见的词汇，这会让你的士气大振。总的来说，这会让整个体验更加的令人享受，而那就是我们所追求的！
And you don have to get stuck on the details. Its great to test yourself and to look up words and to read out loud sometimes.

If you try to understand every single word in the book, you might never finish it, right? Its going to be a lot of work to get there.

You know, you want to make sure that you understand the main story line, and if you aren sure of a word or two, but you understand the general idea of the sentence, then you can try and guess the meaning of the word and move on, you don have to know absolutely everything!
And thats true, even when I read books in English, there will be words that I don recognise or words that I don use that often, words that are used by Americans that we don really use that much here, but I don have to stop and look up the meaning of every word.
你懂得，你想要确保你理解了主要的故事线，如果你不确定其中的一两个单词，但是理解了整个句子的大概的意思的话，那你就可以试着去猜一下单词的意思，然后继续阅读，不需要知道一切的！那是真的，甚至是当我读英文书的时候，都会有我不认识的单词，或者是不怎么经常使用的单词，美国人可能会使用那些单词，但是我们这里并不怎么经常使用，但是我并不需要停下来查每个单词的意思。
I just, you know, read through the story, try to piece it together. Unless its something that is really, really, crucial or important to the story, I don need to know the exact meaning.
我只是读完整个故事，试着将信息拼凑起来。除非这对于故事情节非常非常重要，我并不需要确切的意思。
Now for you as an English learner, if there are too many unknown words on the page, and you really don have a good idea of whats happening in the story, then its possible that this text is too advanced for you.
So try reading something with less unknown words first.
对于你——一个英语学习者而言，如果一页上有很多生词的话，你真的不知道这个故事发生了什么的话，很有可能这个文本对你而言太难了。那就试着读一些里面生词少一些的文本吧。
Right? If a word seems really important or really interesting, but youve still got a bit of an idea of whats going on in the story, then just circle it and move on, you can come back to it and look it up later. Don let it stop you.
Okay so the first tips that we went through will help you to get started, I want you to just commit to reading and to dive into a book and to really just focus on enjoying the journey. As we said before, reading in general is already going to be improving your English skills, right?
好吧？如果一个单词看起来非常重要，或者是非常有趣，但是你已经懂了一点点故事情节发展的话，那就圈出来，然后继续阅读，你可以回来再查阅这个单词的。不要因为这而停止。

But if you want to take a more proactive approach to reading, then the next few tips are going to help you to push your English skills a little further. Read out loud.
但是如果你想要采取更加积极主动的方法进行阅读的话，那么接下来的几个技巧将会帮助你的英语技能更上一层楼。大声阅读。
One of the most effective ways to learn anything is to combine different styles of learning right? This is how we supercharge learning.
So for example, if you are reading something while listening to it, so choosing your favourite book and then finding it on Audible.
学习的非常有效的方式之一就是结合不同的学习方法，对啊吧？我们可以深化学习的效果。比如说，如果你在读的同时又听了的话，那就可以选择一本你最喜欢的书，然后在Audible上面寻找一下。
Audibles got over two hundred thousand books there so the chances of you finding your favourites is pretty high. But then you could take it one step further.
Read it while you e listening to it and say the words at the same time.
Audible上面有超过20万本书，所以你很有可能找到自己喜欢的。但是你可以更进一步。在听的时候大声读出来，同时说出那些单词。
Doing all of this is supercharging your learning. There are so many good things that are happening here at once.
Your minds taking in information in multiple ways, your muscles in your mouth are remembering how to pronounce or how to make the sounds correctly because you e listening to them at the same time.
同时做这些能够深化你的学习效果。有很多有益的事情在同时发生。你的大脑在以不同的方式吸纳信息，你嘴部的肌肉在记忆如何正确地发音，因为你同事也在听。
Now this might not be the best option if you are reading in a quiet library or on a bus on the way to work, that kind of thing. But youll find a way to make it work! Im sure of it.

My last tip is to test yourself. Ive given you quite a few tips already today but I want to give you a tip thats going to help you take your reading from pleasure into study.
我的最后一个技巧呢就是测试一下你自己。我今天已经给了大家很多技巧，但是我要介绍的技巧能够帮助大家将阅读从快乐进阶到学习。
And theres a time and a place for this, right?
Sometimes we just want to relax and unwind, but other times you might be ready to like roll up your sleeves and really dive in and understand how the language is being used.
总会有合适的机会这么做的，是吧？有时我们只是想放松一下，但是在其他的时候你可能准备好卷起袖子，将自己完全沉浸其中，理解语言是如何使用的。
So when you e in the mood, test yourself.
Even if you e not reading next to a teacher it doesn mean that you can pause to ask yourselves questions about the text and check that youve understood it correctly, right?
当你在沉浸在那种情绪的时候，测试一下自己。即使你并没有在老师旁边阅读，也并不意味着你不能停下来问自己几个关于文本的问题，检查一下你是不是理解正确了，对吧？
So one way to do this is to open a book at a random page, read a paragraph, close the book, write down some of the key points that you remember from that paragraph and then go back and study it in detail. Did you miss anything important?
其中的一种方式就是随便打开一本书的某一页，读其中的一段，合上书，写下你记忆中关于那段的关键点，然后回去详细地检查一下。你是不是忽略了什么重要的信息？
This is a really good way to practise your comprehension skills, even if you e on your own, it is possible for you to do this.
There might be a word that youve not have heard of before.
这是练习理解技能的非常有用的方式，即使你自己一个人，也可以这么做。可能有一个你之前都没有听说过的单词。
You don know the meaning of it. But instead of looking it up straight away, look at the words around it and try and guess what the meaning is before you check.
你不知道是什么意思。但是你可以先不直接去查这个单词，而是看看周围的单词，试着猜猜到底是什么意思。
Maybe you know the word, but you haven seen it used in that context before, right? So look it up.
可能你认识这个单词，但是你没有见过在这样一个语境中进行使用，对吧？那就查一下吧。
Try writing a sentence with this new definition. These types of questions that you ask yourself are going to help you check your understanding and then also go a little deeper into the text.
试着用这个新的定义造一个句子。问自己这些类型的问题能够帮助你检查你的阅读理解，而且能够更加深入地理解文本。
And really make sure that youve understood it correctly.
