Art柒艺术空间将于10月5日至11月5日呈现当代艺术家群展“Irony——指人们客观地看待自己和属于自己的东西,或者逆向观察这些,从中找出可笑之处来”。本次展览将由主副两个相距700米的空间展示北屿、林枞、林科、沈之和王芮5位艺术家的作品,作品涵盖架上绘画、装置、影像等形式,旨在营造一个与往常展览观看与思考方式不同的当代艺术空间。VII Art Space will present a group exhibition of contemporary artists from October 5th to November 5th, , the name of which is“Irony——refers to people looking at themselves and their belongings objectively, or performing a reverse observation at them to find the irony ". The exhibition will show the works of five artists including Bei Yu, Lin Zong, Lin Ke, Shen Zhi and Wang Rui in two 700-meter-wide spaces. The works cover on-shelf paintings, installations, images and other forms, aiming to create a contemporary art space that differs from the usual way of viewing and thinking in exhibitions.

展览概念 Concept“我们是肉眼看不见的无名入侵者,我们看,侧耳倾听,嗅闻气味。从物理学角度来说,我们并不存在于此,也不会留下痕迹。也就是说,我们恪守着与与正统的时间旅行者相同的规则。我们观察,却不介入。”

这一段文字与展览的名字(关于irony的词语解释)都出自于村上春树的小说《天黑以后》。小说以两条主线平行发展。第一条主线是故事的主干:玛丽的姐姐爱丽陷入了长达两个月之久的沉睡,这让玛丽感到不安。一个睡不着的夜晚,她在24小时营业的餐馆看书,偶遇爱丽的高中同学高桥。与此同时,在不远处的“阿尔法城”(名字取自于让-戈达尔的同名电影)情爱旅馆里,一个中国妓女在接客时来了月经,被剥光了衣服暴打。因为语言不通,旅馆的经理薰向朋友高桥求助,高桥则把玛丽所在的地方告诉了薰,因为玛丽是能说得一口流利的汉语的。于是,玛丽和几个陌生人在这个夜晚相遇,并逐渐互相了解。而此时,殴打妓女的衣冠楚楚的白川正若无其事地在公司加班,仿佛一切都不曾发生……通篇细枝末节的文字让读者觉得这里的生活无比真实。

而第二条则弥漫着神秘主义色彩。爱丽在沉睡,她房间里的电视机突然自己打开了,屏幕里有一张和玛丽所睡的一模一样的床,以及一个戴了面罩的“无面人”。过了一段时间,玛丽在自己的床上消失了,出现在了电视机里的床上。又过了一段时间,一切恢复原初的状态……

这两条故事线一则现实,一则虚幻,以一种似是而非的关系并存于同一时空(第二条好似是第一条的梦境)。我们在质疑第二条时间线是否真实存在的同时,换一种角度去思考也应质疑第一条的真实性。正如将呈现于Art柒艺术空间的展览,在每一个展览空间都可以看到另一空间的视频监控影像,视频中充斥着面部模糊不清的观众与作品,空间的四条阴角线在影像的另一边得到了延续。我们大家遵循着相同的时间和空间的规则,但监控视频中的时空逻辑是否也是我们遵循的,我们不得而知。这打破了我们的感知规则,屏幕里空间的真实性被我们所质疑,但当我们在屏幕中看到了一个好像是自己的人物出现的时候,恍然地开始疑惑——那我们所处的空间真实存在吗?

这是一个虚拟空间中的“阿尔法城”,每一个空间都遵循着自我的内在逻辑重新解构了现实空间。在这座“城市”里, 我们的观念已经游离了肉体,将实体留在了身后,化作无质量的观念性视点。这样一来,无论何种墙壁我们都能穿越,无论何种深渊我们都能飞跃,我们果真变成了小说中“不掺杂质的一个点”,穿过了隔开两个世界的屏幕。

展览营造了一个时间和空间规则复杂的探索性空间。在此,观众被邀请去从观念上重新理解眼前的事物,把自己当做展览的一部分,将世界重新构筑,被新的实体裹挟。"We are anonymous invisible invaders. We see, hear, feel and smell. From a physics point of view, we don"t exist here and would leave no trace. That is, we abide by the same rules as the orthodox time traveler. Observe but not get involved."This section of the text and the name of the exhibition (the word interpretation of “irony”) are derived from the novel After Dark written by Murakami Haruki, which develops in parallel with two main lines. The first main line is the body of the story: Mary"s sister, Ellie, fell into a two-month slumber, which caused Mary"s uneasiness. One night she couldn"t fall asleep, she went to a 24-hour restaurant and read a book here where she met Ellie"s high school classmate, Takahashi. Meanwhile,in the nearby love hotel called "Alpha City" (named after the same name movie made by Jean-Goldal), a Chinese prostitute got her period while serving the guest, and was stripped naked and beaten. Due to the language barrier, the hotel manager Heran had difficulty in communication and turned to her friend Takahashi for help. Takahashi then told Heran where Mary was because Mary is fluent in Chinese. As the story develops, Mary met several strangers that night and gradually got to know each other.At the same time, the dapper Shirakawa who had beaten the prostitute was working overtime in the company, as if nothing had happened... Readers feel the incomparably real life throughout the detailed description in the text.The second one is filled with mysticism. Ellie was still asleep, and the TV in her room suddenly turned on automatically. There was a bed exactly the same as Ellie "s in the TV screen, with a masked "faceless man" lying on it. After a while, she disappeared in her real bed but appeared on the bed in the TV screen. After another while, everything was back to its original state...One reality and one illusion form into two story lines, coexisting in the same time and space as a plausible relationship (the second one seems to be the dreamland of the first story). While we are questioning whether the second timeline actually exists, we should also think about the authenticity of the first one from another angle. As I will present in the exhibition of VII Art Space, video surveillance images of other space can be seen in each exhibition space, filled with blurred-faced audiences and works. The four dark corners of the space would extend to the other side of the image. All of us follow the same rules of time and space, however, it is unclear whether the temporal logic in the surveillance video is what we follow. It breaks the rules of our perception, thus we doubt the authenticity of the space on the screen, but when we see a character on the screen that looks like us, a question suddenly appears in our minds—is the space we"re in real?This is an "Alpha City" in a virtual space where each space re-deconstructs the real space following the inner logic of the self. In the "city", our concept has been freed from the flesh, leaving the entity behind and turning into a non-quality conceptual viewpoint. In this way, we can cross or leap whatever we want, wall or abyss. We really become "a pure point" in the novel and cross the screen separating the two worlds.The exhibition creates an exploratory space with complex time and space rules. Here, the audience is invited to re-understand what is in front of them based on the concept, to regard themselves as part of the exhibition, to rebuild their world, and to be taken by new entities.关于艺术家北屿出生于1993年,毕业于英国皇家艺术学院版画系硕士(MA)同年于意大利威尼斯策展人学院进修,毕业于英国皇家艺术学院艺术与研究系硕士(MRes),现为英国利兹大学博士在读(实践类),博士方向为“跨区域间的文化误解与亚洲视角:重新思考集体性与中国当代艺术的思维转译”。他从至今以浪漫主义的视觉语言创作了一批大尺寸的灯箱作品以及视觉图像,探讨“个体经验”与“外部世界”的思想联系,并在博士期间开始以“外部人(foreigner)”的立场创作“影像论文”。他的作品通常开始于生活中的偶遇,通过大量的外出活动增加偶遇的可能性,使这种偶遇成为“必然”的,随后结合自己的学术研究,深入作品内容。他的作品被法国DSL艺术基金会、英国皇家艺术学院、中国武汉合美术馆收藏,同时参展于中国湖北美术馆、英国利物浦Aintree医院、英国Chester大教堂、英国伦敦CGP艺术空间、英国伦敦Blyth艺术空间、中国沈阳K11艺术基金会。并于希腊雅典Favelab艺术空间与中国武汉合美术馆举办个展。

林枞1984年出生于福建,毕业于福建师范大学美术学院油画专业,现工作生活于福建福州。从林枞作品中反映出的艺术立场或者态度来看,所有的创作内容材料包括形象、色彩、肌理、文字、结构、关系……等等,全部都是思考的素材,就像语言的结构单元一样,必须简单和抽象但又具有足够的指称能力。这个时候,创作的过程就像是一个在矿洞中借着微弱的意识之光摸黑前行,在黑暗中探索各种可能性。于是,在他的作品中看到了这一个个可能性(即作品)中所隐射并瞬间凝固的、从黑暗中电石火光一闪即逝的可能性遭遇。各种或简单直接、或曲折隐晦的可能性,各种符号、元素以不同的方式在他的作品中遭遇、对话并从意识黑暗的背景中浮现出来,可能让观众感到突兀甚至不适,但是也可能会让他们在一片寂灭的、充斥着稳定而陈旧的幻象的世界之上看见一道光,一次意外的闪耀。林枞的作品曾在,民生美术馆,今日美术馆,福建省美术馆,ART021博览会,妙有艺术空间,应空间等艺术机构与展览中展出。

林科1984年生于浙江温州,现生活工作于上海从开始, 林科将自己变成自己的实验对象,投身于计算机时代的行为艺术之中。林科将笔记本电脑作为其艺术工作室,从计算机软件和互联网中提取素材作为其艺术作品的素材与形式。日常互联网的探索和对应用软件的操作催生出他的艺术创作和自画像。他使用屏幕截图和 屏幕录制软件记录操作行为和概念图像。他主要的作品形式为装置、图像、声音、文字、视频和 电脑绘画。在他的作品中,林科以非常规的方式使用电脑软件,在软件原本设计的意图之外寻找新的功能,从而使的语言从基本的交流功能中得以解放而获得诗性。如果诗歌表达了语言的乐趣,那么林科的作品则呈现了软件用户图像界面的愉悦。林科的创作实践为他赢得了OCAT-皮埃尔·于贝尔奖与第九届AAC艺术中国年度 青年艺术家大奖。他的作品曾在,OCAT当代艺术中心,ZKM媒体艺术中心,Folkwang博物馆, 东京都现代美术馆,民生美术馆, 上海当代艺术博物馆,何香凝美术馆,克利夫兰当代艺术博物 馆,曼切斯特华人当代艺术中心,伯明翰 Ikon Gallery等艺术机构展出。他的作品亦被广泛收藏, 香港M+视觉文化博物馆,北京新世纪基金会,及K11美术馆馆藏。林科同时也是艺术团体“双飞艺术中心”的创始成员。

沈之1993年生于福建福州移居上海,毕业于意大利米兰欧洲设计学院,目前在上海工作生活。他的作品大多和信息数据相关,有理性的通过程序的叠加,让无形数据转变为肉眼可见的图像和实物,也有感性的对着人工智能不断重复同一句话,试探人工智能的意识边界。沈之自小便浸染在艺术氛围中,但他没有选择与家人一样的纯艺术专业,而是赴意大利学习产品设计。国外概念性设计和米兰设计周中对新材料的研究对他造成影响,而在设计学习过程中不断与电脑程序打交道的工作方式,也为他后来艺术创作奠定技术基础。他的作品曾在春美术馆,k11艺术空间,Art柒艺术空间,普陀文化馆等艺术机构展出。

王芮1989年出生于四川,成长于四川。在四川美术学院完成本科学业。随后前往北京。在北京生活工作6年,于搬到上海。现长期沉迷于网络,在网络世界里四处游荡。是虚拟世界的“流浪者”“自然主义者”和“隐身客”。网络ID:“闲人”“人精”。目前主要通过对图像的编辑,来探索自我的身体和意识,以及对外部世界的观察。她的作品曾在上海BANK画廊,纽约David Zwirner画廊,纽约YVE YANG画廊,上海没顶画廊,深圳汇港艺术中心等艺术机构展出。

About Artist

Bei YuBei Yu (b 1993) is a cross-cultural artist researcher now living in both London and Shanghai. He uses the problematic format of different languages and images to translate and interpret the voice of his generation, including personal grumbles, life on the Internet, the intertextuality of different cultures, recycled historical images, and self-questioning in art.Yu"s works deal with the issues of translation and interpretation of images and texts from different cultures and nationalities. His artwork is always preceded by a lot of research into visual culture, fiction and philosophy, and questioning himself has become a lifestyle choice that allows him to push himself forward. For instance, he always puts the audience into his models and makes questioning his concept part of the experience of his artwork. He is also a project manager who questions the role of the younger generation"s culture in different societies and systems.His artworks have recently been collected by the United Art Museum, the DSL Collection, and the Royal College of Art. Yu"s work has been featured in numerous public exhibitions in Europe and China, including the China Art Museum, the Hubei Museum of Art, the K11 Art Foundation, the United Art Museum, the Aintree Hospital and the Chester Cathedral.

Lin Zong

Lin Zong was born in Fujian province in 1984 ,he graduated from the Fine Arts College of Fujian Normal University in . Currently Lives and works in Fuzhou.Among them, the artistic standpoint or attitude reflected in Lin Zong"s works show that all the creative content materials, including image, color, texture, text, structure, relationship, and so on, are materials of thinking, just like the structural unit of language. Both of them must be simple and abstract with sufficient referential power. In fact, to create is to stumble in a gloomy mine with a dim light risen from mind, exploring the possibilities in darkness. Therefore,it can be seen in his works that the encounter of the possibilities, which is hidden inside them(works) and fixed instantaneously ,is like a flash in the darkness. In his works, varieties of possibilities, simple and direct or tortuous and subtle, meet and dialogue with varieties of symbols and elements in different ways and emerge from the dark of consciousness. It may cause the discomfort of the audience ,however, it would allow them to see a light, an unexpected sparkle, above a world of silent, full of stable and old illusions. His work has been shown at Minsheng Art Museum,Beijing;Today Art Museum ,Beijing;Fujian Provincial Art Museum ,Fuzhou;ART021 Art Fair,Shanghai;Mouart Gallery,Beijing;Ying Space ,Beijing

Lin Keb.1984Currently Lives and works in ShanghaiSince , Lin Ke has turned his attention to the behavioral science of the computer age by making himself his own Guinea pig. Converting his laptop into a studio, Lin extracts material from computer software and the Internet as the fodder and form of his art. The mundane act of exploring the vicissitudes of the world wide web and various applications becomes the catalyst for art making and self-portraiture. He records operational behavior and conceptual images by using screenshots and screen recording software. His work takes the form of installation, image, sound, text, video and computer painting.In his work, Lin Ke uses software to set its various functions free from their original purpose in the way that language is liberated from its communicative functions to become poetic. If poetry expresses the joy of language, Lin Ke’s work brings out the pleasure of the graphical user interface.Lin Ke has gained major critical acclaim for his work by winning the OCAT - Pierre Huber Art Prize in , and the Chinese Youth Artist Award of the 9th AAC Art . His work has been shown at ZKM, Karlsruhe; Museum Folkwang, Essen; Museum of Contemporary Art Tokyo, Tokyo; Minsheng Art Museum, Shanghai, Museum of Contemporary Art Cleveland; Centre for Chinese Contemporary Art, Manchester, and Ikon Gallery, Birmingham.
